Charlemagne Palestine is a performer, musician, and visual artist based in Brussels. He was a prominent figure in the New York underground scene and the avant-garde music and performance movements of the sixties and seventies.

In the seventies, he broadened his artistic practice to include textiles, sculptures and videos. Known for performing his experimental music compositions accompanied by stuffed toys, he created a unique blend of auditory and visual art. His large-scale installations frequently feature second-hand toys, which he refers to as divine beings. These toys symbolise popular culture and childhood imagery. In 2019, his multimedia installation “““hhheiligggkkkarrrousellldddommm””” (2018), which included a piano covered in stuffed toys, was showcased at M HKA. Palestine has also collaborated closely with the American choreographer Simone Forti, with whom he created various musical and choreographic performances.
