K.P. Krishnakumar (1959–1989) was a renowned artist and a prominent figure in the Indian Radical Painters’ and Sculptors’ Association, also known as the Kerala Radicals. The group challenged bourgeois cultural attitudes and rejected the revivalism of nationalist artists, advocating a critical interrogation of social and aesthetic issues in postcolonial Indian art.

While Krishnakumar gained recognition primarily for his sculptures, which were often created from rough, unconventional materials, this series of drawings still offers valuable insights into his artistic practice marked by a great expressive power. The magic realism of Krishnakumar’s scenes testifies to the artist’s immense power of imagination and to his sharp observations of everyday life. Combining various styles and cultural references, Krishnakumar creates a world where people, animals and mythical beasts coexist in an emotionally charged reality.
