Yevgenia Belorusets, born in Kyiv, is a contemporary photographer and writer. Her artistic practice intersects photography, literature and social activism, bringing attention to vulnerable segments of Ukrainian society, including queer families, unemployed coal miners, the Roma people and residents of the war-torn eastern regions.

The series of black-and-white photographs presented in the exhibition is an integral part of her novel Modern Animal (2021), in which she explores the Russian-Ukrainian conflict through a unique lens. Utilising a Soviet-style lecture format, Belorusets interweaves various characters and ideas, drawing on interviews with people from the Donbas region.
